The Transamerica Pyramid, at 600 Montgomery Street, was built by architect William Pereira for the Transamerica Corporation from 1969-1972. At 853-feet above sea level, it is the tallest and most recognizable skyscraper in the San Francisco skyline. At the time of its completion, it was the tallest building in the United States west of the Mississippi River, surpassed in 1974 by the Aon Center in Los Angeles. Although the building no longer houses the Transamerica Corporation, it is still strongly associated with the company and depicted in their logo. In 2007, the Transamerica Pyramid was ranked #61 on the AIA 150 America's Favorite Architecture list.
