Cormorant Fishing by Torchlight in Iwakuni, Japan

Traditional longboats use torchlight to attract fish while cormorant masters use specially trained cormorants to catch the fish in the Nishiki River. The ropes around the birds' necks prevent them from swallowing fish that they catch. In the background is the famous wooden Kintai-kyo bridge, built in 1673 without nails. Clapping encourages the birds to work harder diving for fish!
