John Pat Mullan and Hugh Heron, sung by Annie Thompson

Official IRA Volunteers John Pat Mullan and Hugh Heron were shot dead by British Troops after being captured while on active service on the night of 16 October 1972 near the Old Cross of Ardboe, Co. Tyrone. Both men were veteran IRA Volunteers, having been active during the 1956-1962 "Border Campaign". As such they were well known to both the local Loyalist population and the Royal Ulster Constabulary. It is believed that the RUC advised the British Army that if these men were captured they should be eliminated due to thier status as senior leaders of local Republican activists. Their Republican Socialist politics were also viewed as being particularly dangerous by the RUC and British Army. Shortly after being captured Hugh Heron, Quartermaster of the Windmill Unit of the Official IRA, was shot dead at point blank range by British soldiers. At this point John Pat Mullan, a Staff Captain with the Tyrone Command of the Official IRA, attempted to make a dash for freedom, but was also shot down, sharing the fate of his comrade. As in the death of Che Guevarra the brutal murderers unwittingly paid these two brave men the highest compliment....they were considered too dangerous a foe to be allowed to live.
