Cytopathic Effect: Herpes simplex virus 1 infected cells

This is a time lapse movie of Vero cells (monkey kidney) infected with wildtype herpes simplex virus 1. The images are taken every 3 minutes over a period of several hours. The image capture was started several hours post-infection. As the virus replicates, the host cell rounds up as the cellular cytoskeleton is altered. Note the cellular processes occurring the cytoplasm before the cells start to die. Note how the nuclei in some cells start to spin and move around as the infection proceeds. Also note the projections remaining between the cells even after release from the culture surface.
