Glasgow and West - Thu, 02 Aug, 2012
A murder trial jury has heard how a man was stabbed through the heart by a masked gang at a bonfire night party. Medics battled in vain to save Billy Faulds life after the incident in the east end of Glasgow last year. Three men deny murdering the 31 year-old. A fourth man accused had the charges against him dropped. In other news; Scotland's population has hit an all time high and now stands at 5.25 million. In the last decade, the population has expanded by almost two hundred thousand. Today the Registrar General for Scotland said the increase was down to more births than deaths and the fact that more people had moved to live here. And in sport; former Greek international Pantelis Kafes started training with the Rangers squad today as he attempts to secure a contract with the Ibrox club.

Will 27 nations be able to pull as one and become a dominant power in the 21st century?
