Neurodegeneration and Regeneration in the Spinal Cord

In this University of Kentucky program, Douglas Kerr, professor of neurology, molecular microbiology and immunology at Johns Hopkins University and director of the Johns Hopkins Transverse Myelitis Center, discusses the role of stem cells in restoring function to the paralyzed. Kerr narrows in on the basic molecular and cellular mechanisms of paralysis, focusing on inflammatory mechanisms that result in motor neuron injury and death. Learn about the specific mechanisms of paralysis in the motor neuron disorders spinal muscular atrophy (SMA) and amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) as well as the autoimmune paralyzing disorder transverse myelitis (TM).
