NYC - Metropolitan Museum of Art: Armors for Man and Horse
art
The collection of armor, edged weapons, and firearms in The Metropolitan Museum of Art ranks with those of the other great armories of the world, in Vienna, Madrid, Dresden, and Paris. It consists of approximately 15,000 objects that range in date from about 400 B.C. to the nineteenth century. Though Western Europe and Japan are the regions most strongly represented--the collection of more than five thousand pieces of Japanese armor and weapons is the finest outside Japan--the geographical range of the collection is extraordinary, with examples from the Near East, the Middle East, India, Central Asia, China, Southeast Asia, Indonesia, and North America. The Arms and Armor Galleries were renovated and reinstalled in 1991 to display to better effect the outstanding collection of armor and weapons of sculptural and ornamental beauty from around the world.

The Metropolitan Museum of Art's permanent collection contains more than two million works of art from around the world. It opened its doors on February 20, 1872, housed in a building located at 681 Fifth Avenue in New York City. Under their guidance of John Taylor Johnston and George Palmer Putnam, the Met's holdings, initially consisting of a Roman stone sarcophagus and 174 mostly European paintings, quickly outgrew the available space. In 1873, occasioned by the Met's purchase of the Cesnola Collection of Cypriot antiquities, the museum decamped from Fifth Avenue and took up residence at the Douglas Mansion on West 14th Street. However, these new accommodations were temporary; after negotiations with the city of New York, the Met acquired land on the east side of Central Park, where it built its permanent home, a red-brick Gothic Revival stone "mausoleum" designed by American architects Calvert Vaux and Jacob Wrey Mold. As of 2006, the Met measures almost a quarter mile long and occupies more than two million square feet, more than 20 times the size of the original 1880 building.

In 2007, the Metropolitan Museum of Art was ranked #17 on the AIA 150 America's Favorite Architecture list.

The Metropolitan Museum of Art was designated a landmark by the New York City Landmarks Preservation Commission in 1967. The interior was designated in 1977.

Malva – Exquisite Monster Art Doll

Please see my Profile Page for more information.

Malva is one of a series of “Exquisite Monsters” inspired by antique wax medical models and specimens representing genetic anomalies, disfigurements and diseases. However, these characters are wholly a product of my own imagination and do not depict specific real-life conditions or persons. They arise out of my fascination with biological abstraction/surrealism as it is expressed in nature and how it is framed by human culture.

Douglas Quay at Night - Alderney
 night
The original dock in Alderney's Braye Bay was Douglas Quay, built sometime in the 1700's.
This is another night shot, taken with very little light with a 60 Second exposure. It shows the back of the old quay. The hill on the other side of Braye Bay is Fort Albert. look at the original size to see the light trail from someone driving along the road on the coast towards the camera.
It is interesting to note that, although the Sun had long set, the colour that the Sun makes on the very high cloud in the distance with the long exposure. (NO HDR, or tone mapping or anything special. Just processed from RAW & curves adjusted

Brooklyn - Brooklyn Heights: 155 Willow Street
street
The northernmost of three Federal-style townhouses set back from the street on Willow Avenue, 155 Willow Street is among the oldest in the Heights, having been built in the 1820's. Arthur Miller owned No. 155 in the early 1950's and wrote the Crucible here.

A plaque on 157 Willow Street says that it hid an underground storage space that was used to hide runaway slaves as they escaped northward to Canada.

United/Continental pilots march on Wall Street
street
Image by Dan Nguyen @ New York City
Uniformed pilots, more than 500 at least, gathered in a pre-arranged area near the Stock Exchange for about 10 minutes. No long speech, mostly a photo-op, then they headed back out of the Broad/Wall Street area. The organization is unrelated (formally) to #occupywallstreet; it just happened to occur at the same time.

Background story here

Clarification: There may have been picketing for most of the lunch hour till about 4ish. I saw pilots walking through the Financial District before noon. The photo op, which is what you see here, lasted not more than 15 minutes as the pilots were allowed to fill in the fenced off area near the Stock Exchange.

(There was a truck behind me with photographers, which is why the pilots here are looking up)

Getty Images had a photographer there who actually saw the protest, I caught only the tail end of it: photos.denverpost.com/mediacenter/2011/09/photos-airline-...

On June 3rd thousands gathered in Tahrir to demand a presidential (civil) council that consists of Hamdeen Sabahy, Abol Fotoh, Khaled Ali, Mohamed El-Baradei and Muslim Brotherhood's Mohamed Morsi. The Brotherhood haven't agreed so far.

Also protesters went in objection to candidacy of Ahmed Shafik, who's part of Mubarak/SCAF's regime. Shafik will be facing MB's Morsi in the runoff.

Blow Up - New Delhi : A Photographic Street Intervention by Blindboys.org
street
A SEAT of power for more than a thousand years, the city-state of Delhi is a survivor of conquest and change. New Delhi the location for our third photographic street intervention, after Bangalore and Paris we head to Delhi.

THE LOCATION : Cannaught Place

Today, new money has conquered the inner circle of C.P making it the capital of a rapidly changing India. Spiraling rents have put a Swarovski shop where a small independent bookshop once stood, and in the same market, a shop called It’s All About Bling sells spangly earrings. Away from Retail chains that are fast taking over the early 20th-century colonnades of the outer ring we made the middle circle of Connaught Circus our gallery on the streets.

Armed with over 700 A3 photography prints we started near at the N Block and we pasted out way around the circle till we were back at Pallika Bazaar.

I Love Slides
film
All you people who only shoot digital, promise me this: Just once, before it becomes too hard to find the film and the processing, dust off some old 35mm camera and shoot a roll of slide film.

Seriously. This moment right here, where you lay out your slides on the light table, and you see them gleaming in all their luminous color... There is nothing else like it.

[Edit: This roll was shot on Kodak's Elite Chrome 100, which along with Ektachrome has been discontinued as of March 2012—it's the end of Kodak's slide films.]
