Our 2nd hike up Steenbras Gorge (20 Jan 08) to the Crystal Pools. This time the objective was to reach the geocache at the top of the gorge. We reached the top but could not locate the cache....

Hydnora africana (bobbejaankos) is a parasitic plant that lives off the roots of Euphorbia plants. The flower takes over a year to develop, and is as hard as wood.

The flower is pollinated by Carrion beetles. After pollination a fleshy fruit develops over two years. The fruit is edible to humans, birds and small mammals. Each fruit can contain over 20 000 seeds.
