Royal Scots Greys watering horses in France

Cavalrymen are sitting bareback on their horses in a river, allowing the horses to drink. The horses have been unsaddled and are only held by neck collars. Several of the men have extra horses on lead ropes. Other men and horses wait their turn on a bridge. Farm buildings can be seen in the background.

This was an easy and efficient way to water the horses and would also have bathed and rested their legs. It was perhaps less sensible in terms of water hygiene when large numbers of troops also needed clean water supplies.
