I went up to the Mall Area in New York City's Central Park yesterday to capture some of fall color starting to happen in city. The wide sidewalk here is lined with the American Elm Tree. These trees are grand, with large, erratic branches that look and act like the Octopus Tentacles from 1000 Leagues Under the Sea. (Remember that ride at Disney World? - Ha, I'm getting old). The leaves all change in harmony in this area of the park because it's the only tree around, making for a postcard-like shot. I was even able to capture the famous sidewalk with no tourists and vendors present because of the rain we had yesterday.
On a camera/technical note - I was annoyed to discover that my Canon 24mm-105mm, image stabilizer sometimes causes my photos to be more blurry than without it. I checked my focus quite closely on the spot while taking this shot and ran it with and without the stabilizer. The stabilizer definitely blurred the background when I turned it on. That's frustrating. I wonder if anyone else has had this problem?
Day 279: City Lights
In the middle of last night, the alley cats got in a bit of a row. They were growling and squeaking, and hissing like their tails were on fire. Not only could I not sleep because of the noise, but I was also afraid for my safety, with all their claws and whatnot flying around.
To make a long, miserable story a bit shorter (but no less miserable), I ended up finding a park bench to sleep on... only the cars were so loud, and the city lights were so bright that I didn't sleep a wink.

New York City's High Line is one of the better urban revitalization projects I've seen in a while. This elevated track that runs 1.45 miles from 12th street, in the Meatpacking District up to 30th st. Once used as a freight line, this track now serves as a aerial greenway making its way through the old but also revitalized warehousing district of the Westside. It's a wonderful walk if you get the chance to visit New York City.
This shot I took of a friend while on a photo shoot. The theme was obviously jazz and the city. The High Line's wonderful views of New York's iconic avenues are a perfect backdrop for any Jazz player and its association with urban life.
